EFFECT OF THERAPEUTIC ULTRASOUND IN TREATING BREAST ENGORGEMENT: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

Abstract

Breastfeeding is an important human physiological process for both the mother and her child. Breast engorgement is a painful condition as a result of increase vascularization of breast tissues and accumulation of milk in ducts. Various studies have been conducted to rule out treatment strategies for breast engorgement. It has been found that both pharmacological and non-pharmacological are recommended to patients. Majority of the treatment has shown beneficial effects. Ultrasound has shown prominent effect in treating breast engorgement. Both thermal and non-thermal ultrasound has shown significant effect in management of breast engorgement. There are various researches debating about the benefit of therapeutic ultrasound. Primary Aim of this peer-review is to critically summarize the data which had shown effect of therapeutic ultrasound as a treatment procedure for breast engorgement. This systematic peer-review was conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines. Ultrasound has shown significant effect in treating breast engorgement.
