Unawareness might not be the only cause of Ineffective Cervical Cancer Screening

Abstract

Aim: To determine the knowledge of recommendations and to explore the attitudes and practices of Pap smear screening among clinicians and pre-clinical teaching staff. Methodology: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study where data was collected through a questionnaire based survey. Results: More than three-fourths of our study cohort had a good level of awareness about the recommended guidelines for cervical cancer screening. Screening, Pap smear, Cervical cancer however, this knowledge did not translate into practice, with majority of them having never undergone Pap testing. The most common hurdles to regular screening being cervical cancer, screening, konwledge, Pap smear time constraints and social embarrassment. Conclusion: Good level of awareness regarding screening recommendations for cervical cancer does not translate into good screening behavior even among the most qualified and experienced tier of health care providers i.e. Doctors.
